Introduction

I had a Blackview phone that i got here in new zealand. Completely a terrible phone. It is possible that a rugged phone is more durable but even with warranty and support from a local shop, the features are terrible. The notifications dont work and playing MP4 videos just stopped working. I use 1Password app and is just useless. I dont recommend Blackview anymore.

Decision making

To make a decision I have been seeing the Pros and cons. Most probably the chosen brand is Oppo, as it is a family tradition.

Summary of the pros and cons of using a flip phone

Pros

  1. Pricing: Flip phones are generally cheaper than smartphones. While there are expensive flip phones with smartphone capabilities (e.g., Samsung Galaxy Fold 4), there are many more affordable options for basic devices.
  2. Simplicity: Flip phones typically offer a straightforward interface with physical buttons, which can be a benefit for some. They are often marketed as being easy to use
  3. Privacy: Since flip phones are simpler and may not connect to the internet, they are less likely to track your location, collect information about you, or advertise to you.
  4. Size and Durability: Flip phones are generally more compact than smartphones and have better-protected screens. If you’ve ever shattered a smartphone screen, you know how expensive it can be to replace it.
  5. Reduced Online Time: Using a flip phone can help you stay connected while reducing your time spent online, which can be a benefit for those looking to decrease their screen time.
  6. Popularity among Gen Z and Celebrities: There’s a rising trend among younger generations and celebrities opting for flip phones, signaling a cultural shift towards simpler, less-connected devices.

Cons

  1. Limited Capabilities: Traditional flip phones have limited capabilities compared to smartphones. You may not be able to get online at all, depending on the model.
  2. Not Ideal for Traveling: Basic flip phones may not be suitable for frequent travelers, who may miss out on important news, alerts, digital tickets, online travel arrangements, and GPS capabilities.
  3. Network Compatibility: Traditional flip phones may not be compatible with the current 4G network. When the 3G network shut down, many people were forced to upgrade. Although most flip phones today do work with the 4G network, you likely won’t have access to 5G speeds unless your flip phone is also a smartphone.
  4. Dependency on Smartphone Features: Many people have become accustomed to the features offered by smartphones, such as internet browsing, apps, and more, making it difficult to switch back to a more limited device.

Final thoughts

Switching to a flip phone can be a worthwhile experiment, especially given the low cost of traditional flip phones. If you find that a flip phone doesn’t meet your needs, you can always switch back to a smartphone. Alternatively, you can opt for a flip phone that also has smartphone capabilities, offering the best of both worlds
